Custom 404 Page Tutorial

PART 2: Uploading the files and common errors

How do I upload the files?

Now, that you have created the files, you need to upload them using the FTP. Your custom error page can be uploaded easily to your root directory. The .htaccess.txt file has to be renamed to .htaccess after transferring. You should transfer it in ASCII mode(although it might work in BINARY mode as well) to your root directory(assuming you want it to affect all your site). If you want it to affect just one directory, then upload it there. After uploading the file will disappear. Don't worry if you can't find it,it won't show up in most FTP clients, because files beginning with a dot are considered as secure.Smart FTP will show this file though. How can you rename it then, you ask? Try to configure your FTP program to make it show the files, or use Windows FTP. Click here for a tutorial.

That's it. Now, each time a file in your site is not found, the visitors will be redirected to your custom error page. Just be sure not to misspell the url of you error page in the .htaccess file, because this will cause an infinite loop in your browser, where the server tries to load the error page, it can't find it and because of that it tries to load the error page and so on.

I hope this tutorial will help you create the custom 404 page you want. If for any reason, you feel this tutorial is unhelpful and need further advice,
