Information on the Characters of Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider Characters

Lord & Lady Henshingly Croft

Have you noticed the couple that attends Lara's funeral in the title screens of Tomb Raider Chronicles? They might seem to be Lara's parents, but they're not! In fact, they can't be, because they were killed in a plane crash in the Himalaya in 1978. And that's about the only thing we know about them! The two people seen in the title screens are Lara's aunt and uncle, as Caesar kindly pointed out to me.
Winston(aka Jeeves)

Lara's well-educated butler. He's been offering his services to the Croft family since a long time before Lara was born. He's always polite to Lara and he's a good friend of hers. He is the roomer of the Croft estate. However, in the training levels of tomb raider 1,2 and 3, he is just a short wrinkled guy that follows you with a tray of tea. He moves and makes weird sounds like sighs, making you wonder why he hasn't retired yet. In Tomb Raider 5 though, we realize that he's aware of many Lara’s secrets - he's the one to open her trophy room. He once lived with his wife(I don't know what happened to her, maybe that's a weak point of the storyline)in Connusie. Lara, when she was a 16-year-old teenager, stayed there with them for a while.

Jeeves, a butler's tale

Larson

(seen in:Tomb Raider 1(Tomb of Qualopeg,Sanctuary of Scion) and in Tomb Raider 5(Streets of Rome Episode))

He's a good-looking but always dirty Texan guy, whose level of stupidity is extremely high. That is because he was hit in the head by a donkey when he was young(lol). He wears a red T-shirt, faded jeans and cowboy boots. Lara meets him twice in her quest for the Scion(he's hired by Natla) and eventually kills him. Before that, though, he meets him in her quest for the Philosopher's stone, where she gets rid of him by defeating him in a gun battle (1996).

Pierre Dupont

(seen in:Tomb Raider 1(St. Francis' Folly) and in Tomb Raider 5(Streets of Rome Episode))

He's a well-educated French guy, who is clever but not very talented in gun battles. Together with Larson, hardly putting up with his stupidity of course, they tried to get the Philosopher's stone. Lara was after this artifact as well. Due to his gullibility, Lara managed to leave him helpless in a deep pit, but he somehow survived the big fall. The second time they met though, in St. Francis' Folly, the consequences of the battle for the second Scion piece were extremely fatal for him.(1996)

Jacqueline Natla

(seen in Tomb Raider 1 and defeated in level:Great Pyramid)

She's the head of the Natla Technology company and she's the most popular tomb raider villain to date. May it be for her good looks, attitude or character. I personally think that all things combined have given this result. To get on with the story, she once was one of the rulers of Atlantis and had under possession one of the three pieces of Scion. If she had used its powers wisely, nothing bad would have happened. But, Natla believed that natural selection was at an all time low and abused her powers to create a race of monsters .Her monsters went mad and destroyed the island of Atlantis. Qualopeg and Tihocan, the two other rulers, stripped her of her powers and froze her into what they thought would be an eternal prison-the Ice Cylinder. But Natla never felt sorry for her creations. And when she escaped from the prison-it took several hundreds of years- she hired some people, including Lara, to find the three pieces of Scion. After retrieving all three pieces, she would be able to create mutated species again and become the ruler of the world. After realizing that Lara was not a money-thirsty jackal and that she could cause serious problems to her plans, she tried to get rid of her. And that was the beginning of her final destruction. Lara defeated her in the Great Pyramid in 1997,even though she had transformed into a winged demon with sharp claws and she disappeared from the Earth's surface, never to return.

Qualopeg and Tihocan

Two of the three rulers of Atlantis. They froze Natla into what they thought would be an eternal prison-the Ice Cylinder. But their island, Atlantis had already been destroyed by Natla's monsters, so they ran away. Qualopeg and his followers migrated to Peru and took his piece of the Scion with them. They established what became the Incan civilization. Tihocan fled to Italy, carrying his piece of the Scion with him, and his descendants later created the Roman Empire.

Shotgun Sam, Natlas's Cowboy, Skateboarding Kid

(seen in Tomb Raider 1:Natla's Mines)

These three thugs were hired by Natla to finish Lara off. The annoying Skateboarding Kid kept shouting "You firin' at me? You firing at me? Huh? Ain't nobody else here, so you must be firin' at me!" and was armed with a pair of Uzis. Shotgun Sam carried a shotgun and the Cowboy's weapons were the Magnums. All three were killed somewhere in 1996.

Brother Chan Barkhang

(seen in Tomb Raider 2(Diving Area)

This monk's father bombed Gianni Bartoli's vessel. He was sent on a mission to prevent Marco Bartoli from getting the Seraph, because this would lead him to the key for the Temple of Xian, the Talion artifact, located in the Barkhang Monastery in Tibet. Unfortunately, he was beaten down by his men because he wouldn't give Bartoli the info he wanted and when Lara got to him he was dying. He thought that Lara was some sort of a goddess that had come to save him. He managed to tell Lara about the Seraph though and this information was extremely valuable to her. Then came Bartoli and started shooting at them. Lara made a harrowing escape, but the monk was killed(somewhere in 1997).

Marco Bartoli

(seen in Tomb Raider 2,defeated in Level:Dragon's Lair)

He is the megalomaniac and crazed leader of the Italian gang Fiamma Nera. His secret hideout is located in Venice and he's after the dagger of Xian. His father was Gianni Bartoli, a well-known magician. To get an idea of how evil and cynical he is, here is one of his threats to Brother Chan Barkhang that refused to talk:"Blood or answers, I have no preference. He should spill a bit of both!" He's a power-thirsty jerk that will stop at nothing to gain power. He didn't even hesitate to press the dagger into his heart to transform into a huge dragon. But Lara managed to avoid his flames and the battle between the two in the Temple of Xian ended up with Lara victorious(1997).

Doctor Willard

(seen in Tomb Raider 3,defeated in Level:Metorite Cavern)

Willard did that to Lara A scientist seeking for power. He encountered Lara in India, where she had just found the Infada Stone. He told her about the rest of the artifacts made from the same meteorite material and hired her to travel around the world to retrieve them. He seemed to be a friendly guy then, but he "forgot" to tell Lara that this particular meteorite material resulted in genetic mutation when tested on humans. When Lara found out the truth, she got really angry,(Level: Antarctica) but Willard managed to escape from her by knocking her over with his table. Lara run after him and she found him again in the Meteorite Cavern Level. He had mutated into a giant human-spider that threw magic green bolts. Lara managed to defeat him in 1998, by removing the meteorite that gave him power.

Tony

(Seen in Tomb Raider 3,defeated in Level:Caves of Caliya)

Dr. Willard hired three adventurers to find the four meteorite artifacts: Tony, Randy and Rory. But when you are deep in the jungle and the sun is beating down and you are exposed to his deceptive rays all the time without wearing a hat, you might suffer from heat exhaustion. But you might as well be driven insane, kill your partners in morbid ways(I found a corpse hanging from the ceiling) and start saying weird things to the first person you come across about how tired with people you are, because they always talk and talk and never let you alone...The second thing happened to Tony. He apparently had magic powers-he made several boulders fall around Lara, and she was very lucky to survive. After following this lunatic into the Caves of Caliya, Lara killed him in there, in 1998 and retrieved the Infada Stone.

Leader of the Damned

(seen in Tomb Raider 3,in Level:Lud's Gate))

He was once a worker in Sophia's labs and he was used as a guinea pig in her experiments with some sort of immortality power which was supposed to give everlasting beauty. This man had thought that this job would pay well and that he would be able to live a better life, but a failed experiment turned him into a faceless monstrous creature, presumed dead. Lara broke into the hideout of the Gang of the Damned and he helped her with Sophia, because he wanted to take revenge. The only thing he asked in return was some embalming fluid from the natural history museum.

Sophia Leigh

(seen in Tomb Raider 3,defeated in Level:City and in Tomb Raider 3 Gold, defeated in Level:Reunion)

She's an attractive blond woman about 30 years old. Her hands are always well-manicured and she's dressed in elegant and expensive clothes. She is the head of the Leigh Cosmetics Corporation. She used her assistants as guinea pigs despite having promised them good accommodation e.t.c and they ended up as faceless people, because of a failed experiment that had something to do with an everlasting beauty potion. She had the Eye of Isis under possession and Lara battled her to retrieve it. She had a kind of magic wand (septher) that threw magic green bolts and she tended to giggle like a maniac. Although normal weapons couldn't cause the slightest damage to her, Lara managed to defeat her in 1998.But she was somehow resurrected from the dead and battled Lara again on her guest for the Hand of Randthmore and in spite of the fact that she was very sure that she was going to win that time, she was defeated for a second time with fatal consequences.

Puna

(Seen in Tomb Raider 3,defeated in Level: Temple of Puna)

There is not really much to say about this guy. He lives in a temple and sits without moving in his throne. We can assume that he's a sort of god or son of a god. He has his body colored red and he's very old. He has under command a small army of green lizards and he can strike blue bolts at Lara. She defeated him and his lizards in 1998 and retrieved the Element 115 artifact.

Defeat him in Tomb Raider 3

Werner Von Croy

(First seen in Tomb Raider 4,Level:Angor Wat,but also seen in Tomb Raider 5(Tower Block Episode))

Werner Von CroyLara's former mentor but also a ruthless rival. He first met Lara after an archaeological lecture of his at her school, where he was impressed by the clever questions of the 16-year-old teenager, that showed a bright interest in archaeology. Although convincing her parents was difficult, they eventually gave in and let her join Von Croy on his expedition to a Cambodian Temple, where the Iris artifact was located. When they found the artifact, they had their first argument, which had very bad consequences on their relationship. Lara wanted Von Croy to show some respect to the inscriptions' warnings, whereas he, being greedy and hungry for fame, wanted to get to the artifact straight away. He got his leg trapped somewhere when he was about to grab the Iris and he got locked in the temple. Lara attempted a rescue but she had to flee to save her own life. However, Von Croy managed to escape from the temple together with the Iris,(maybe that large knife he had with him helped him out?)which he put in his headquarters. He wanted to take revenge from the girl that had betrayed him. Lara stole the Iris and the hatred between the two grew stronger. Later on, he was possessed by Seth and tried to kill Lara, but when Seth's spirit abandoned him, he tried, unsuccessfully, to save her from the temple of Horus. And then ,he devoted the rest of his life trying to find her in the pyramids of Egypt. I find his character quite interesting. It has so many sides-the arrogant and egoist archaeologist that wants to become famous, the jealous mentor that realizes that his pupil has excelled him, the lunatic power-thirsty jackal that wants to take the artifacts from Lara and then kill her and finally, the father that sees his daughter vanish into the darkness and devotes his life to finding her again. In the next Tomb Raider game, his life will come to an abrupt end. He will be hired by Peter Van Eckhardt to steal five 14th century paintings from the museum of Louvre and he'll phone Lara Croft for assistance. And then ,he will be the victim of a horrifying murder. Lara will come into suspicion for the crime and you'll never be quite sure of her innocence.

Ahmed

(First seen in Tomb Raider 4,Level:Tomb of Seth)

This guy is your guide in Seth's tomb. He carries a lit torch and you should really let him enter some areas first, to avoid some nasty surprises. After seeing a couple of scorpions, though, he'll flee away. Later on, you'll discover that he's a traitor and that he's been spying on you for Von Croy.

Jean-Yves

(First seen in Tomb Raider 4,Level:KV5)

He's a good friend of Lara's and an archaeologist with a vast knowledge on Egyptian mythology. He's a quite fat French guy, which I have the suspicion that has some hidden love interest on Lara. To stop gossiping and to get on with the story, he was the one to realize that Lara had activated a terrible prophecy by removing the amulet of Horus from the sarcophagus. He pointed her into the right direction, telling her that she had to retrieve all the pieces of the Horus' armor and return them before Von Croy could make his evil plans come true. He never stopped giving her valuable advice. He was later kidnapped by Von Croy, but Lara managed to save him.

Father Bram Patrick Dunstand

(Seen in Tomb Raider 5,Black Isle episode)

He is the Croft's family priest. When young Lara secretly followed him to an Irish island, where strange things were happening, he did everything he could to protect her and prevent her from getting into trouble. In the end though, maybe because of all those unholy creatures, his hair turned white. Lara saved him from the demon Verdilet.

Demon Verdilet

(Seen in Tomb Raider 5,Black Isle episode)

He was once a man, called Vladimir Kaleta, who worshipped in the first Kremlin and butchered the Swede and the Lefsky on the banks of the River Neva. When Lara met him, although he was not a man anymore he could walk and breathe because he had inherited the gift of eternal life. However, he couldn't get past floating water, so he was trapped in a barn in the Irish island Lara and Father Dunstand went. So, he kidnapped the priest, the first person he had seen after 700 years, to make Lara stop the waters. Lara did so to save the priest, but in the end she defeated the nasty demon, by calling the right name(verdilet) from the ancient book she had found(the Bestiary).

Charles Kane

(Seen in Tomb Raider 5, Russian Base episode)

Charles KaneBorn in Maroco, in 1949. This French guy was a friend of Lara and guided her through Russia, giving her information about how she could get to the German U-boat to find the Spear of Destiny. Before that though, he had been teaching her for several years, recognising her potentional. He had no children and because of that, he treated Lara as if she were his daughter.

Admiral Yarofev

(Seen in Tomb Raider 5,Russian Base episode)

He's an admiral of the Russian Navy, that is forced to help Sergei Michalov the mafioso to find the Spear of Destiny, because he needs some money badly to feed his men and himself. He's not a bad guy-he didn't kill Lara when she found her hiding behind some crates in his submarine. He put her in prison. Later on, he was blamed for not disposing her straight away by Michalov. Here are some of his words, which I find very wise:"Yes, we are forced to run with wolves but we do not kill indiscriminately like they".After Sergei was killed and Yarofev's ship began to sink, he helped Lara to escape, but he stayed there, as a good captain, to die in his ship. He only asked Lara to tell his story-the story of how the proud men of the Russian navy fought against the enemy from inside and sacrificed their lives so their dear country might once again stand proud.

Sergei Michalov the mafioso

(Seen in Tomb Raider 5,Russian Base episode)

Lara had dealt with this guy once in the past and she remembered that experience as "unpleasant memories".Sergei Michalov hired an admiral of the Russian Navy to set off to find the legendary Spear of Destiny. When Lara found the artifact, he rushed to grab it from her, ignoring her warnings about how dangerous the artifact would be for someone who didn't deserve being its bearer. Sergei was killed by the deadly wrath of the artifact.

Zip

(Seen in Tomb Raider 5,Tower Block episode)

Born in USA, 1974. He's very good at cracking security systems, so he becomes Lara's assistant on her way through Von Croy's Industries' high-tech buildings. He helps her via headset radio contact. His comments are not what you'd tell funny or clever and Lara is hardly ever in mood to take a joke. Anyway, his advice is usually very helpful to her.
Kurtis Trent

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Kurtis is an ex-Legionnaire and experienced warrior with limited occult abilities. He can move objects-for example, he can move a key to the other side of the door with his telekinetic abilities. Raised as an initiate in an ancient order called the Lux Veritatis, Kurtis took on his father's role after the Alchemist hunted down and killed the last of the Order. As the sole remaining descendant, Kurtis is now on a quest for revenge against those that wiped out the Order and killed his father. Although Lara will still play a large role in fighting scenes, he'll be more action-oriented than her. While Lara has her twin pistols, Kurtis has a trademark weapon of his own: the Chirugai which can be used to target and attack multiple enemies in one big swoop. This razor sharp disk can be even manoeuvred in mid flight using Kurtis' limited telekinetic powers. If that's just a little to wacky for you he also carries a pistol with a laser-targeting system that kills monsters. Lara will meet him in the museum of Louvre. He will seem to be a step in front of her, but eventually, they'll team up, because they are both after the same goal, each one for his entirely different reasons. Kurtis Trent may have his own game series later on. Read the
full story.
Peter Van Eckhardt

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Peter Van Eckhardt An insane fourteenth century genius known as The Black Alchemist. After 500 years imprisonment in a containment pit he escaped in 1945 and set about reviving the biblical race known as the Nephilim. He is an evil alchemist who's is after five 14th century paintings called the "Obscure Paintings". He's not after gold like other alchemists. What he wants to discover is the secrets of the atom, that will enable him to create life or steal life from others. He's quided by an unspeakable force. The paintings he's after are located in the museum of Louvre. When all five are combined, they will give nearly unlimited power to their possessor. He wears glasses and part of his body is mechanic. He has built some secret laboratories in Prague, to which Lara and Kurtis are definitely going to pay a visit. He's the leader of a sinister and criminal underworld in Paris.
Louis Bouchard

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Louis Bouchard Underworld Parisian czar and owner of Le Serpent Rouge, a nightclub in a seedy back street quarter of Paris. With a reputation for ruthless and opportunistic violence on a large scale, Bouchard runs illicit operations throughout the capital.
Margot Carvier

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Margot Carvier Madame Carvier is a historian and academic at the Dept. of Medieval and Renaissance Studies and has been involved in recent archaeological digs beneath the Louvre. She is a friend and colleague of Werner Von Croy. She's definitely an intelligent woman- you can tell that from the way her eyes look at you. However, you can't figure out whether she's one of the good or bad characters. According to someone who has played the game, you could see Lara with a paper soaked in blood in her hands, where you could read: "Mme. Carvier: Alphonse St. number 108". The connection between her and Lara is not known yet.
Daniel Rennes

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Daniel Rennes He is an active member of the Paris underworld, and a close friend of Louis Bouchard. As a master forger, printer, and archivist, Rennes specializes in the provision of illegal documentation and currency, using a back street pawnbroker shop as a front. Known to be insanely paranoid about conspiracy theories, he has rigged his entire operation with booby traps.
Luther Rouzic

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Luther Rouzic Librarian Honrarium at Prague City Archives. Acknowledged world authority on dead languages and text. Keeper of the Strahov archives.
Marten Gunderson

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Marten GundersonA veteran of countless conflicts world-wide Gunderson runs The Agency. This is a thinly disguised mercenary recruitment service providing specialized forces for anything from basic security to invasions.
The Shaman

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

The ShamanA member of the Bedouin tribe that cured Lara after her adventure in Egypt.
Kristina Boaz

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Kristina BoazOwner of the psychiatric clinic Strahov in Prague. From what I've heard, it's possible that Lara and Kurtis will end up there.
Joachim Karel

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

Joachim KarelThe head of a sinister organization called "The Cabals". He's a ruthless enemy who wants to kill Lara.
Inspector Closeau

(Will be seen in Tomb Raider 6)

That's a new character and we know very few things about him. He's the one to deal with the case of the murder of Von Croy and he's after Lara because he thinks she was the murderer. It's possible that he'll be more than a headache for Lara- he might play an even more important role in the story.
