Dental Hygiene Tips

When on holidays, you want to have fun, but a sudden toothache could ruin your plans and damage your wallet! ( I hear dental services are really expensive in the US). You also don't want dental hygiene to get in the way of your entertainment. Maintaining it will be easier if you follow these tips.

  • Make sure you take care of your known dental problems before you leave (aching teeth, failing filings) or, if your teeth are seemingly healthy, get a quick check up. It's very difficult to find a dentist when on holidays, because they tend to go on vacations too. A friend of my mother who's a dentist was stayin with us during the holidays and she got dozens of calls on her cell phone every week, because people had neglected to take care of their teeth problems or at least get a check up before going on vacation.
  • Chewing gum is your friend. During the holidays, it's always a good idea to chew some gum in between meals, so that your breath is fresh and the bacteria activity in your mouth is kept at a minimum. According to the ads for sugar free, dental chewing gum I've seen on TV, it helps maintain the ph of your mouth at an optimal level.
  • There are places we visit every year, for example, my mother's hometown. For such places, it's generally a good idea to keep a separate tooth brush there to use every time you visit, so that you don't have to pack your tooth brush all the time. I find it a bit inconvenient to pack all my teeth care products when on holidays, so I usually end up buying small bottles of Listerine and small tubes of tooth paste wherever I go.
  • Still, it's a good idea to have a dental hygiene handbag where you store dental products you can't or don't want to replace, for example, a toothbrush for your one or two-night stays at hotels.
