Tomb Raider 5: The Enemies and How to Defeat them

This section will help you with the enemies you meet in Tomb Raider 5. The more you proceed into the game, the harder the enemies become.
This section will give you some info on the enemies(the place they appear, their strength, the amount of bullets the need to get killed e.t.c) and tips and strategies to defeat them easily. You may not want to read on, because you want the enemies to be a surprise.

The enemies in Tomb Raider 5 and especially the boss ones and the ones in the VCI Headquarters are very hard to defeat, because they can't be killed in the usual way or require you to have special skills. Don't forget to search under their dead bodies-which fade away almost immediately-because many of the items needed to proceed in the levels are hidden there. I have marked as enemies some things such as machines, because they do behave like enemies and not like hazards. The enemies have now an improved AI
*,they can hide from your bullets, sleep and move objects. Each enemy makes a special sound and they can react to or emerge because of the sounds you make.

Below the enemies are sort by the place they first appear-they can appear anywhere else after this particular place though.

New Enemies

1.Boss Octapus:This scary machine-like thing tries to mess up with you in Rome. Its green lasers can electroduce and kill you immediately. You need the revolver there. You have to combine it with the Laser Sight and press look, so that you can aim at his green eyes. I suppose you find a safe spot to do this. You must jump over the fence and hide behind a block in the middle of the room or in the small room behind the enemy(the one with the red machine). If you are too near the block, he will still be able electrify you, so you have to be a small step further(use the walk button once for that) but not too far either. You can crawl to protect yourself, but you must be standing up if you want to shoot him. It's difficult to break his eyes, because they are small and his head is moving almost constantly. So you have to zoom in the Laser Sight view and try to fire with a good timing. Once you break both eyes, the enemy explodes and you can take your prize: the Mars Symbol.

2.Knight Boss 1:You should use rapid weapons here, because this enemy is quick and powerful and you have to jump left, right, back and forward while shooting at him, in order to avoid his blue electric bolts. You should stay away from his sword, too and avoid letting him push you until you hit the wall, because then it will be difficult to escape from him-you'll be trapped. Keeping moving and firing is the key to defeating him. After you've finished him off, you can take the Venus Symbol.

3.Guardians of the Chamber:Once you've finished dealing with Larson, three horrible snakes emerge from the chamber door. Fortunately, they can't move. They throw fire blasts at you, which can actually turn and slightly change their direction to follow you if you are too close to them. The Shotgun is the most effective weapon, but I suggest using rapid weapons, because you have to jump to avoid their fire and with the Shotgun, it's very easy to miss them and waste your precious ammo. I think you should draw your pistols and start firing straight away. When you hear the awful sound they make, jump left/right-they are going to throw fire. You have to be careful and time your jumps well, because as I've already mentioned above, the fire can follow and burn Lara while she's on the air. By jumping left and right when appropriate while firing and by saving at least once you've finished off each snake, you will be able to get rid of them easily. Don't try to dive into the small pool if you catch fire, just reload.

4.Gladiators:A good idea is to shoot at them with your pistols and backflip quickly so that their swords don't harm you too much .One of them drops the first Colosseum key.

5.Knight Boss 2:The same as the first Knight Boss.He can be killed in the same way.The only difference is that he has a hammer instead of a sword and that his lasers are green instead of blue .He'll drop the second Colosseum key for you.

6.Russian Soldiers:Not very hard to kill, even with your pistols, but their weapons do a lot of damage to you.

7.Big Crane :In the large room with the storage crates in the start of the level "The Base", there is big metallic crane that is operated by a rather nasty man that wants to kill you..You can see the shadow of the crane on the floor when it's about to smash your head, so that makes it easier to avoid it .You can do many things in this particular room. For that, you must try to run quickly and stay at a places with roof above so that the mechanical crane won't be able to reach you. You have to jump over the crates and run unprotected for a while if you want to proceed into the level though. Click here for details on how to do that. My advice is that you try to pull up quickly because the crane can reach you while hanging and that you save each time you've made a jump correctly and you don't see the shadow of the crane nearby. Once you've made it, Lara will kick the crap out of the crane operator, as it's shown in a cutscene.

8.Cook:You don't have your weapons here, so you have to use another trick. You must walk (PC users should use Shift) and try not to be seen, or he'll attack you with a big knife. When you are right behind him, escape to your inventory, select the crowbar and use it. Lara will knock him out and he'll drop a very useful key, that will enable you to take your weapons back.

9.Baddies(sailors,mafiozos e.t.c.):A few rounds with the pistols will bring them down, but if have low health, try using the Shotgun.Just be sure to aim well.

10.Small Submarines:You can't kill them, you can only make them stay away by lighting a chaff flare. You should also try to avoid their torpedoes, by swimming quickly.

11.Baby Ghosts(Imps):You are young Lara now and you don't have weapons(would you be able to shoot a ghost, anyway?)Because of their small size, they can follow you through crawlspaces. They are pretty quick too. Some of them throw things at you. You can avoid them by climbing on blocks or such. Try not to get too close to them, because they'll begin to scratch you viciously. A torch or an iron clapper-you should be able to find them both-will scare them away.

12.Skeletons with Swords:You are young Lara now and you don't have weapons. Fortunately, these nasty creatures don't move. I suppose you light up a flare to see where exactly they are and then do a standing jump, starting one square away from the skeleton. That way, his sword won't be quick enough to harm you. Good timing is the key. When you use the Bone Dust in the appropriate place, they'll be blown away. It's better to save after you've got past each skeleton.

13.Sea Demon:You are young Lara now and you don't have weapons. You have to steal his silver coin when he isn't watching you. Then you have to swim quickly to the cage in the river, before he catches you, and use the silver coin on the it. You can then see a cutscene where the demon is trapped in the cage. Yay, now the imps will have him. The difficult thing there is grabbing its coin. You need to have a very good timing.

14.Laser Guys:these enemies are pretty tough. In order to beat them you need to be quick, accurate and calm. The only way to kill them, is with a shot in the head, so you have to aim quickly with the HK riffle or their powerful laser shots will kill you. There's no special technique for that: Just press look to get to Laser Sight view, when your riffle is drawn. Then, use the direction keys to move the red sign to the face of the enemy. Press action, fire and, if you've aimed well, he should go down. What makes things difficult is the fact that two or sometimes one laser shot are enough for Lara to say farewell to this world. Don't try to hide, because they'll still be able to reach you. You need to face them. Of course, in some places, you can walk silently behind them and subdue them with chloroform. In the place with the stairs in the first level, it's better to make them emerge by walking to where they are. Then you should rush back to the stairs, stay behind the bars and try to aim at his face. Generally, his lasers won't be able to reach you, but in some cases they will. It's extremely difficult to aim at his face from there, because he'll be too far for your accuracy. But I've found that this is handy if you're running out of medipacks.

15.VCI Guards:these nasty guards can be taken out with a single headshot,(see Laser Guys above for details on how this can be done) or with 6-7 plain shots. You'll need to subdue some of them with chloroform as well. If you have enough ammo, I suggest you kill them without using the Laser Sight view ,because except if you are in a place where they can't see you or if they are asleep e.t.c, you'll get too much damage while trying to shoot their ugly heads. To subdue them with chloroform(when you don't have weapons)soak a piece of cloth, which you should be able to find, with chloroform(you can find some bottles on shelves).By combining these items, you'll end up with a piece of soaked cloth. Then, walk quietly behind the guard and when you are a step behind him, escape to your inventory, select the soaked piece of cloth and use it. It's a little frustrating to find the exact position behind the guard and this trick doesn't work on all the guards you'll meet.

16.Scientists:You have to ignore the first two you meet. They are harmless, but if you draw a weapon, they'll activate a gun turret in the room you are, which will of course kill you in seconds. The third doesn't give you anything if you kill him. The fourth one has to be threatened by your weapons in order to help you to proceed in the level. If you want secret number #29,you must kill him. I think that's a very nasty murder. Oh well.

17.VCI Soldiers:They can be taken out with a single headshot,or with 6-7 plain shots. Some of them have their faces protected, so you can't use the headshot.

18.Android 1:You can't kill him in the usual way. You can jump into his room, climb on the block, aim quickly and shoot the red valve to flood the room and then fire, while standing on the block nearby to bring him down. You need to have conserved enough bullets and medipacks to survive this though. Or, you can shoot him from above by aiming with the Laser Sight(press the Look button) each time he decides to walk somewhere you can shoot him. That requires a lot of patience though. Once you see his mechanical body begins to get revealed, you can shoot the valve and flood the room .Kill him in the second way if you don't have enough bullets or medipacks. DON’T SAVE during your attempt to kill him. Be sure to save your game AFTER you've finished him off and not to step on the flooded room because you'll be electrified. You shouldn't save your game while shooting at him because if you reload, you will be surprised to see that all the damage you have caused to him so far is gone. After he is killed (either way),you have to jump to the ledge above the red valve. It is a tricky jump: You need to do a running jump from the right back corner of the block. While on air, press the Left Arrow and you should land on it. However, if you press Action you won't make it. There is another way to get there: by doing tricky jumps above the white ledges in the other corner. That's certainly a lot more complicated. After you've made it to the ledge, you should aim with the grappling gun and make a rope. That way, you'll be able to swing to the opening in the opposite wall. Press the switch there to dry the room and unfortunately, close the doors where you came from. Swing with the rope again and take the key bit the android dropped. In order to exit the room you need to press the switch again. That way, the doors will be opened and the only thing you'll need to do will be to get back to the block and get out of the room.

19.Helicopter:You can't harm it,but if you sprint and run you'll take the less damage

20.Android 2:After you press the switch in the room with the bottles(cafeteria?)he pops up. You need to jump quickly over the pits without stopping and then turn left, sprint along the hallway and reach the wall with the switch and press it. It is difficult to set up correctly for these jumps, so it's vital that you try to practice them well. If you are quick enough, you'll be able to trap him in the room above the switch. Be sure NOT TO SAVE, after pressing the switch and during the race, or the stupid android will get stuck in a pit and won't follow you into the room. That's a nasty bug that hasn't yet been fixed. After you've pulled the switch, you should go to the gas room and go through the only door that opens. There is a switch there. Pressing it causes another door to open in the gas area. Go through it and press the switch. You'll be able to see the nasty robot in the other room struggling to get some air. Eventually, he'll fall dead on the floor. After he has died, press the switch again ,kill the soldier that emerges and exit the area. Press the switch that opens the doors to the room with the dead android and take the key bit he's dropped.

Enemies from other Tomb Raider Games, also seen in Tomb Raider 5

1.Dobermans:They are quite fast, but they do not attack in groups of 2 or 3 as they used to do in Tomb Raider 2, so it's very easy to kill them if you fire with your pistols and jump around. You can find a safe spot to shoot them from too.

2.Rats:They appear in very large groups ,whereas in the previous tomb raider games they appeared in groups of 2 or 3 or even one at a time. It's not very clever to try to deal with each one individually so the best way to get rid of them is to run away and wait for them to scatter around.

3.Bats:They appear in large groups, but if you have your weapons(like you do in Rome) you should try and shoot them with your pistols. Otherwise,if you are unarmed(like you are in Ireland)you should run and wait for them to fly away.

4.Lions:They usually accompany a gladiator but you don't find groups with more than 2 lions in them. They aren't very fast and it's not really hard to kill them if you backflip while firing with your pistols.

5.Larson:Larson is not dead yet, and he gets in your way when you've got all the three symbols needed to open the chamber of the Philosopher's stone. He has a powerful revolver, but he only needs a few rounds with the pistols to give up.

6.German Sheperds:They usually accompany a Russian soldier. There are few of them and it's easy to finish them off with pistols.
