Really Scary Urban Legends

Scary Urban Legends Urban legends are stories passed from mouth to mouth describing unlikely but supposedly true events. Some of them are just incredible, others are pretty scary and make my skin crawl. A recent scary urban legend (1997) was one about dangerous kindey thieves [note to self: kidney, not kindey o_0]. The story goes that a dangerous organized gang operating in various major U.S. cities was drugging business travelers and stealing one of their kidneys to sell on the organ transplant black market. A really scary urban legend indeed. There are millions of variations to this story - and this myth is one of the scary urban legends that has taken some publicity. It has been mentioned on TV and TV shows - even in anime shows. For example, in Weiss Kreuz, episode 6, there's a girl who thinks she has fallen victim to the kidney thieves. [Okay, I might not integrate this part in my essay ^-^] Off course it is impossible to find out where this urban legend originates from. The thing is, people fell for it and "Travelers Beware" messages flooded the media. But why do people fall for urban legend, especially the scary kind? Why do people believe urban legends? Three main reasons: Scary urban legends make extremely good stories. So, they get passed around, even if the story tellers don't really believe in them. The more people hear the urban legends though, the more likely it is some will believe them. They look like they could be true all right. Attention is paid to detail in order to make them seem really scary AND believable. They generally want to spread a message with mass appeal. (Don't go with hookers/ Don't get drunk/ Don't travel to dangerous places/e.t.c because you might end up with a lost kidney).
