Step 0: Are you sure the lost files aren't sitting in your recycle bin? That traschcan? If they are, you don't need to recover lost files, simply because they are not lost! Just click restore and the "lost files" will be recovered.
Step 1: You can recover your files if you have backups of your lost files somewhere. Sometimes you make copies of important files without remembering it. So, just use the search function in your OS to check if you can recover lost files that way.

It's possible to recover lost files, because the data might still be on your hard drive, however waiting to be overwritten by new data. That's one of the reasons it's a good idea to have your hard disk virtually separated in two drives (for example, drive c and drive d), because that way you can safely install the lost files recover program in the drive your lost files didn't come from. For example, if you accidentally deleted files from the folder D:\music, the program to recover lost files should be placed in drive C:\. There are a few lost file recoverers that are quite good, most of them however won't let you actually recover lost files if you download the free trial version. When I lost my songs collection due to a stupid error, I was able to recover more than half of the lost files by paying 20 bucks for a file recover program, called, eh File Recover.
However, it's not very likely that you will be able to recover all your lost files. That's the reason the best thing you can do to avoid future losses is a
hard drive backup.
