Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery - Removal of Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom Teeth. My horror story detailing the removal procedure of the two wisdom teeth of my lower jaw. Everything about the wisdom teeth surgery, the pain (or lack thereof) and the after-effects.
Wisdom Teeth Surgery
I needed to remove two wisdom teeth at the age of 15 so that I could go on with my orthodontic treatment. There wasn't enough space in my mouth for the wisdom teeth to surface without problems. If I hadn't gone through the surgery, the wisdom teeth would have surfaced, caused a lot of pain and destroyed the straight array of my front teeth in the process. Even while knowing the positive effetcs of the surgery, I was a bit reluctant to sign up for wisdom teeth removal because I was afraid of the pain and possible complications. I didn't have anyone my age to tell me about the experiene, that's what I am about to rectify right now with this "wisdom teeth surgery" information page, which will clarify some things about the wisdom teeth removal procedure and give you some advice on what to do afterwards.
Things to know about the wisdom teeth surgery
This is probably stating the obvious, but I will say it anyway: One wisdom tooth at a time! If you need to have two or more wisdom teeth removed, you'll need to make two or more separate appointments, say, 3 months apart from each other.
You need to get your teeth x-rayed, so that the surgeon knows exactly where to cut.
Wait a moment, did you just say "cut"? Yeah, but the pain during the removal procedure, that is during the surgery, is non existent, because they give you an anaesthetic injection first. Yes, the injection hurts a bit, but it's only seconds.
During the wisdom teeth surgery, you might want to close your eyes, so that you don't see what the surgeons are doing in your mouth. Trust me, you don't need to know. I removed my glasses so I couldn't see.
After the wisdome wisdom tooth is removed, the surgeon will probably give you some instructions, which include not eating for at least one day and not consuming any kind of fluids other than water, chewing on some kind of bandage, not brushing your teeth for a while and taking some antibiotic pills. So, make sure you follow the instructions.
Your cheek will be swollen for a period of 4 to 7 days and you'll look like hell. Seriously, don't go through surgery if you have to go to school all the days - it will be pretty awkward to explain that you look like a balloon because you've just undergone wisdom teeth removal surgery. Be sure to schedule the wisdom teeth removal in a period with no social events coming up!
The post surgery pain will make you feel uncomfortable. The pain will not be insufferable, but you'll probably need painkillers. So, it's not the actual surgery that hurts, but the week after.
You should wash your mouth with salty water. Helps prevent infections and other unpleasant complications.
Dental Hygiene
So, good luck if you have scheduled an appointment for wisdom teeth removal surgery any time soon. You'll need it.
